It’s where it all started

Udaipur - Mahabalipuram - Chennai >>> Deptford!
..is you’re supposed to keep them up to date!
I’ve found it difficult enough to keep this relatively up to date when I have had my laptop with me. I often get the feeling there’s more important things I could be seeing and doing other than sat at a screen typing.
That thought has been confirmed now I am on my travels. Just getting to a place has been a trauma and I only left 4 days ago. I have made it into Kerala and Deptford turns up tonight so things aren’t going to get any easier!!
At the moment I’m not sure how I am going to deal with the whole communication overload. I have absolutely no intention of sitting at a machine for hours on end when the world is going on outside and that is one of the reasons I didn’t bring my laptop with me.
Maybe I’ll just post a few words if it’s raining and I’m waiting for a bus (although I might miss something at the bus station if I did - like my bus!) or maybe I’ll just post a few pics so you can get an idea of what I’ve seen. Or maybe you won’t hear from me for a month.
We’ll just have to wait and see…
I think not having a conversation in proper English for months is beginning to affect my sanity, or at the very least my English. The only thing I can’t get in India are cigarette filters. It has made me conscious of cancer since I explain to everybody that they are used as a preventative measure. I’ve even started to believe myself and have become seriously conscious of the fact I don’t have any and will therefore die of cancer before September.

I would rather be at a temple underneath a banyan tree hosting a parents and children’s rally.
Rajikala is my translator for the next few weeks, an MA student from Kerala looking at migratory child labourer’s and I’ll be helping her out with her case studies. She speaks English, but her mother tongue is Malayamar and she doesn’t understand a word I say. Most of the MVF staff are from Andra Pradesh who came here after the tsunami and they speak Telegu. They can’t speak Malayamar or understand a word I say. In Tamil Nadu they speak Tamil so all the volunteers speak Tamil and they don’t understand a word I say. Rajikala can also speak a bit of Tamil as can most of the MVF staff but the volunteers don’t speak any Telegu or Malayamar.
Somehow though, we can all still smile together.
